Back to school update; police, crosswalks, buses and more

Update (September 12, 2024):

I hope the kids have had a safe and successful start to the school year! Here's a back-to-school update from my office:

➡️I will be hosting two bylaw officers on Tuesday morning and we will be visiting St. Kateri St. Benedict, and Wazoson, to speak with parents about traffic safety. I want to see a greater presence of both police and bylaw in Barrhaven this school year. This process started last week when OPS Inspector Lemieux and I visited St Joseph’s high school

➡️I am monitoring the OC Transpo bus situation, given the increase in ridership due to the 3-day in office work model for federal employees. I spoke to OC Transpo GM, Renee Amilcar, and as of Wednesday, OC Transpo had additional buses in service after they had to remove some due to R1 service, and they also had a supervisor to monitor the transit situation firsthand.

➡️With back to school in full swing, Ottawa Police officers, citywide, will continue to monitor for traffic violations near school zones, intersections, and school bus stops.

➡️I'm glad to see that the Minto Recreation Complex staff got the St. Cecilia crosswalk/speedbump painted last week, making it more visible and a little safer for pedestrians!

➡️I've been visiting crossing guard-controlled sites, such as Malvern, to monitor traffic flow and to thank the crossing guards for their work! The crossing guards do a great service to our student's safety, so be sure to thank them!

➡️My office will be establishing a Youth Advisory Group to help represent their issues and concerns. Reach out if you want more information on this.
