I am disturbed and frustrated by the ongoing retail thefts in our community, and this was accentuated this past week by a nasty incident at our Shoppers Drug Mart. I will be attending the Police Services Board on Monday and here is a sneak peak of my speaking notes. Bottom line: I am committed to action on this – through local advocacy as well as engagement with the Provincial and Federal governments.

It has been a busy few weeks getting a number of significant legislative items ready for council that I think are really important to our community. This week I provided a delegation to the Police Services Board speaking to the spike in retail thefts in the community and the need for additional police presence in Barrhaven, and this was followed up with an in-depth conversation with Alan Neal on CBC radio one. Linked to this discussion, I also brought forward a notice of motion regarding vehicle crime: stunt racing, vehicle theft, and illegal exhaust modifications, and spoke with Kristy Cameron and CTV morning Live on this important issue as well. We are about to embark into stunt racing season and what I can do to help the city crack down on this, I will do. The police are working on it as well, as Chief Stubbs reiterated that officers will be deployed to hot spots to speeding and street racing during the warmer months. Should you hear stunt racing or illegal exhaust modification and you want to help me out, please call the Ottawa Police at 613.236.1222 and email me at david.hill@ottawa.ca so that our police services can improve their database in order to execute sting blitz operations on the likes of RioCan drag racers. Last year there were many successful traffic enforcement blitzes however, the sentences are not strong enough and this is the reason that I submitted this motion.
