Last night I had the opportunity to engage the Associate Soliciter General for Auto Theft, Zee Hamid and George Darouze, along with several council colleagues, about the current situation in Barrhaven/Ottawa. I asked to see specific results from our municipal/provincial advocacy to the federal government on criminal code changes within the next year, specifically regarding multiple offences and bail reform. I also asked for better resale administration, such as reVINning and improved bills of lading, and the need to ensure that our police have the tools and policies to prevent the trend in the GTA of carjackings from coming to Ottawa - one car theft is one too many and we need to address that for sure, but violent carjackings would be a redline that we can’t let become a reality here in our community. I will continue to work with our Ottawa Police Service and police board on this.
I am pleased to see the reduction in theft frequency in Barrhaven, but one stolen vehicle is still one too many and I will continue my advocacy with both the provincial and federal governments in order to continue to see improvements to this situation.
