Happy 2025 Barrhaven! As we look ahead to the new year, I wanted to take a brief step back in time to review the 2025 budget we passed last December and the impact it will have on our community and City.

The 2025 budget was a good one for Barrhaven West. Let’s take a brief tour of the key elements.

Let’s start with the largest financial investment for 2025 in Barrhaven West: $32 million for the new Barrhaven Civic Centre. By combining this new municipal funding that Mayor Sutcliffe and I were able to obtain with funding already secured from the Province and Federal Government, thanks to advocacy by my predecessor Jan Harder, MPP McLeod, MP Arya, and Don Winchester, the Barrhaven Civic Centre is now fully funded. While we are still very early in the planning process, this new centre will include a library, an outdoor plaza, and space for community groups to gather and connect. The facility will be located just behind the Barrhaven Cineplex and very close to the Barrhaven Centre bus station. The City can now start the hard work of designing and building a centre that truly brings our community together.

Infrastructure was the name of the game in this budget and you won’t be surprised to hear that Greenbank was top of my priority list. I was able to secure another $10.86 million for developing the next phase of the Greenbank realignment. This is in addition to the funding I locked up last year to begin phase 1 of the project. Construction on the first stage of the project is expected to start in 2026. There is still more work ahead of us to ensure Greenbank is built ahead of schedule, but this budget builds on the momentum of last year.

We also received $1 million for an Environmental Assessment for future improvements to Barnsdale road. This project will help set up the new 416 interchange for success, and ensures we learn the lessons from the current Greenbank road and have the necessary infrastructure for new developments completed before people start moving in. Finally, we received over $2 million dollars for road re-pavement and intersection improvements, including at Cambrian and Borrisokane (roundabout installation in 2026), Jockvale and Greenbank (re-pavement), and Darjeeling and Greenbank (traffic signal installation).

The 2025 budget also had some significant investments in city services that Barrhaven residents rely on. Since getting into office, I have made advocating for investing in our emergency services a priority. I was proud to vote to hire an additional 22 new police officers and 23 new paramedics for 2025. I’ve heard you loud and clear on the need for more police presence in Barrhaven.

That’s just a quick glance at some of the budget items coming to Barrhaven over the next year. I’ve already started advocating for Barrhaven priorities in the 2026 budget and would appreciate your input on what you would like to see from your city. I’m always just an email away at David.Hill@ottawa.ca
