Making the Jockvale/VIA rail area safer for pedestrians is one of the things I've been working on since I took office. There's a lot to unpack with this situation, so here are a few updates:
1) The bus route stops (New Ways to Bus) have been modified so that both stops, northbound and southbound, will be on the same side. For Steepleview residents, some who have mobility issues, now they won't have to cross the road.
2) We're looking at investing in the pad next to the crossing site to make that area a little safer. Public Works and OC Transpo will be reviewing this file.
3) Thirdly and most importantly, the work towards at pedestrian crossing site itself. It's a more complex situation than usual due to the presence of the VIA rail train tracks. I have had a number of meetings with City staff and consultants to come up with a pedestrian crosswalk that is functional and meets the added jurisdictional requirements. We're not there yet, and when I have an update I will share it, but know that we are working on it.
